The Best Workouts to do While Reading ...

I’m going to be honest; if I couldn’t read while exercising then I probably wouldn’t exercise at all. Being able to read makes that part of my day one that I look forward to. You may find that a Kindle or another e-reader is easier to use while exercising. You’ll have to experiment and see what works best for you. With some careful thought you can combine exercising with your favorite hobby of reading.

1 Stationary or Treadmill Running Combines Well with Your Favorite Book

If you do stationary or treadmill running then you can read while you work out. It’s important to note that you need to be cautious about reading while doing any type of exercise. Even when you’re reading you need to be alert to your surroundings. It may help to start jogging slowly on the treadmill and work your way up to running if you’re reading at the same time. It does get easier with practice.

2 Leg Workouts Are a Good Workout While Reading

Let’s talk about leg workouts. When you’re focusing on your legs, your arms aren’t engaged. Therefore, they’re free to hold a book. You can go through your leg lifts and other exercises while losing yourself in a great novel. It helps take the pain out of a rough leg day.

3 Read While You Ride Your Stationary Bike

This is a perfect exercise to combine with reading. A stationary bike isn’t going anywhere so you can read to your heart’s content and know there’s no danger. You’re seated on the bike and letting your legs do all the work. I don’t have a stationary bike but I’d love to have one. This sounds like the perfect way to get your workout in while getting your reading fix as well.

4 Go through Your Yoga or Pilates Routine While You Read

Of course you can’t read while you’re in a yoga or Pilates class but if you’re going through a workout alone then why not? You can put yourself through much of a yoga or Pilates routine while reading. You may need to be a bit creative with how you hold your book open but it can be done. This is actually one of the workouts where an e-reader would be handy to have. No hands are needed to keep the book open.

6 Walk with a Book in Your Hand

This is something I do almost every day. If I’m walking, I’m reading. There are some tricks to this. You can use a treadmill or choose to stationary walk. You can also walk on a path if you’re careful to make sure the path stays clear. The important thing is not to tune out completely.

7 Do a Workout DVD While Reading

This depends on the workout DVD that you’ve chosen. Some of them would be easier than others to read while you’re getting your exercise. But this can work with many workout DVDs. Simply mute your TV and watch enough to follow along. In those in between minutes, squeeze your reading in. Yes, it’s a lot of trouble but for an avid reader, any minute to read is a treasure.
