1

Put Things in Their Place

There’s a place for most things at the gym. And the rule of gym etiquette here is that you put them back after you've used them. One gym item that frequently doesn’t get put back after use is weights. While everyone can forget once in a while, do your best to not be an offender of this rule. This stands true even if they weren’t in the correct place when you started using them.

2

Keep Your Volume down

I totally get that your music motivates you. I need mine when I’m working out, too. But it shouldn’t be so loud that it disturbs others at the gym. Some people prefer to work out in silence. Another important note on this subject; if you talk on your cell phone, keep it to a low volume or step outside for a moment.

3

Clean Your Equipment

This is a matter of treating others the way you’d like to be treated, right? When you’re done with your equipment, wipe it down with antibacterial wipes the way you want someone to do for you. Yes, it takes a minute and you may be sure you’re not sick but it’s the right thing to do. On the off chance you’re harboring an illness; you’ll feel better later knowing that you were cautious for the sake of others. After all, if you spread a germ at the gym then it can come back to you again.

4

Respect Other’s Zone

While the gym is a good place to make friends, not everyone is interested in that. If you meet someone that wants to talk, then that’s great. You may have found a lifetime friend. But if you encounter people that seem to prefer their silence, let them have it. Working out is a personal experience that we all enjoy differently.

5

Don’t Hog the Machines

You certainly have as much right to use the gym equipment as others do. After all, you pay your membership fees, too. But the unspoken rule here is to not use a machine for more than thirty minutes at a time. If no one seems to be waiting on the machine then you can probably extend your session. But if you know someone’s waiting, give them a turn while you work on another piece of exercise equipment.

6

Be on Time

If you’re in an exercise class or have an appointment with a trainer, gym etiquette mandates that you’re on time. It’s respectful of the class or the trainer. While sometimes things happen that make you late, let that be the exception rather than the rule. Additionally, you’re paying for that time. You want to get your money’s worth.

7

Remember What You’re There for

Sometimes, especially after you’ve been working out for a while, you may find yourself very tempted to give others guidance in the gym. While it’s okay to give some advice or help someone figure out a piece of equipment, remember that you’re there to work out. Most gyms have trainers for those that wish to have their services. So stick to some simple, friendly advice and let the trainers take it from there.

These are 7 rules of gym etiquette that it’s good to know. What would you add to this list? What rules of gym etiquette do you think it’s important to follow?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

you can also add try not to make inappropriate noises at the gym. seriously there are always guys at my gym who grunts so loud near the weights that you thought they're animals in mating season -____-

So true... I love working out at the gym!

Also, in classes watch out for the person in front of you. They CANNOT see you behind them obviously.

Agree with the author, missalliedee and Meng Zheng!

I love my gym

There's a guy at my gym who likes to use a very specific elliptical. Even if there are others exactly like it available, he will wait until you are done and then immediately climb onto his favorite. That's his choice, but I'm going to do my entire workout, because he could go on another one while he is waiting. my workout usually takes 45 minutes, and I will not be pressured into shortening it because he is inflexible.

lol i hate when people do not repack their weights especially when its the heaviest weights and i can barely even lift them!

Soooo true! I love my gym, they have franchises all over the city which as a member, I have access to. The one closest to my place though is no longer my option anymore sadly because people leave everything everywhere, not everybody cleans the machines after use, and after 5pm most people go there to socialize, and it's packed, seemed like a club! Ok ok that's fine to each its own. The one I go to now is closer to my work, people go there to workout, the environment is so respectful and certainly all the points on this article are followed! ;)
