1

Choose Something That Appeals

When you don't know how to start a fitness regime, begin by choosing a form of exercise that appeals to you. You're more likely to maintain interest if you opt for something you like; if you don't really enjoy what you're doing, you'll probably let it slide. If you're not sure what you fancy, try some taster classes to see if you enjoy that form of exercise.

2

Start Gently

If you're new to fitness, or haven't worked out in a while, ease into your exercise program gently. It's important to build yourself up, and not try to achieve too much too quickly. You could injure yourself by pushing too hard. Begin with short spells of exercise, and gradually increase your time as you get used to working out.

3

Daily Routine

Going to the gym once a week won't be that effective; you need to make fitness a part of your daily routine (with a day or two off). You don't need to do vigorous exercise every day, but do try to include some gentle exercise, even if it's just taking a walk or walking up the stairs.

4

Choose Realistic Goals

Obviously you're not going to jump from zero fitness to running a marathon in just a few months. But many people lose interest in their fitness program because they try to do too much too quickly, and feel discouraged because they aren't seeing results. Your goals should be realistic and achievable. This isn't a competition, so don't try to compete with anyone else.

5

Buddy up

Motivation can be hard to come by at any stage of a fitness program, but especially so when you're at the very beginning. It's usually easier when you've established it as part of your routine. So if you're finding it tough to make yourself exercise, find yourself a workout buddy. If you're meeting up with someone to work out, you're more likely to get off the sofa, pull on your kit, and go running.

Keep It Simple

A beginner's workout doesn't need to be complicated or include every possible exercise. Start with a simple routine, and gradually incorporate more exercises as you get used to the routine. Yoga, swimming, or walking are good ways to start. You could also look for an exercise class aimed at beginners.

7

Set Aside Time

As well as trying to do some form of exercise every day, you should dedicate time for your fitness program. Make an appointment with yourself; it's for the benefit of your health, so however busy you are, set aside time for your workout. Everyone should be able to find a short block of time in their day for their fitness routine.

It's never too late to begin a fitness routine, so don't let yourself be discouraged. Our bodies need looking after, just as our cars and houses do. So keep yours well oiled, and don't forget to give it the right fuel to keep it going! What is your favorite way to work out?
