With the weather starting to get warmer each day, do I really need to go into the various reasons to walk more? I think walking is a great way to exercise, especially when the weather is just right. If you add walking to your routine, you may just find yourself reaping the benefits without really doing all that much. I know I look forward to going out for walks around the block or at the local park. Check out these reasons to walk more.

1. 10,000
A few years ago, the British National Health Service (NHS) recommended taking 10,000 steps a day and has now been adopted worldwide as a health mantra. That’s about five miles worth of walking. On average, most people get between 3-4,000. One reason to walk more is to improve your overall health and maintain that level of fitness. Your body is your vehicle for life so it’s important to take care of it. You may try using a pedometer to track how many steps you take in a day.
2. Desk
Do you work a desk job where you’re hauled inside and seated for extended periods of time? You need to get out more and stretch those legs. Walking is a great way to do so. You can walk at your lunch break, go talk to a colleague versus telephone them from your cubicle or just break up the time you spend sitting. In fact, sitting without moving isn’t healthy for you. And if you do it day in and day out then it can start to have an effect on your overall health.
3. Fresh Air
One thing I like about going for a walk is the fresh air. Air-conditioned or recirculated air in your car, work and home can get stale. Fresh air allows you to oxygenate the body and feel refreshed. If it’s a nice day, why not step off the treadmill and go for a walk around the block? You get the benefit of walking and enjoying the fresh air.
4. Exercise
Walking is such a great exercise! It’s convenient because you can do it anywhere without any special equipment. As much as I love yoga, I need my mat. As great as Irish dancing is, I’m lost without my shoes and music. Walking can be done wherever you are. You can burn calories and stay in shape. It’s a win-win!
5. Heart Health
Walking can help strengthen your heart if you get in a regular practice. It lowers your risk for a stroke and heart disease while making sure your cholesterol stays in check. It also helps you maintain a healthy blood pressure. Who knew? Walking is incredible for your heart so you might just put on your shoes and start walking today.
6. Vitamin D
This one isn’t that hard to figure out. When you walk outside more often, you are exposed to sunlight on a regular basis. Sunlight provides vitamin D, which affects bone health and immunity. So walking can actually ensure you have a solid input of vitamin D in your system so you are ready for adventure.
7. Get Social
If you’re like me and spend more than your budget on get-togethers with friends, you may consider walking. It’s a wonderful way to catch up, stay healthy and spend time with your friends and family. You can go to a park with your friends and walk as you gossip about all the latest news. Have fun with it!
It’s no wonder why you should add walking to your routine with all of these benefits. What is your favorite part of walking? What are some more benefits of walking?
